Marmaris, Turkey

By Onisha • October 11, 2014 • Dance, Turkey
Semi Finals

Angelo and I decided to head down to the south of Turkey to a beach town called Marmaris for a dance competition. We took a very uncomfortable overnight 11 hour bus ride from Istanbul to Marmaris. It was one of the times where we looked at each other and questioned, why are we not flying? Anyhow, we arrived safely but poor Angelo lost his iPhone immediately after we arrived. I felt so horrible as Angelo uses that phone to get us everywhere around the world, literally. It is how we figure out entire metro systems, locations of businesses, how we make phone calls, etc. I am sure you can imagine how he felt, on top of that iPhones are much more expensive in Turkey to buy.

Anyhow, we figured how to get into our hotel, checked into our nice room and continued forward with our trip as planned. As I had mentioned before, we went to the south for UFB, or Underground Funky Bass which is a huge annual event they throw in Turkey. Competitors travel here from all over to compete and exchange. There was categories in Hip-Hop, House, Breakdancing, Popping and Locking. Some of the judges was Kappela from France, Maurizio from Italy, Storm from Germany and Erkan from Turkey. We really enjoyed competing and meeting other dancers from Ukraine, Russia, Morocco, China, Turkey and the UK.

I was so proud of Angelo as he got up to semi-finals and I got into quarter finals. I am not much of a competitive dancer and I get very nervous entering battles, but I was grateful for the experience and meeting so many other amazing dancers. We had half a day off and we went to the somewhat crowded beach, but relaxed a little bit before heading back to the event. It was difficult to record all of the battles as both of us were competing. Overall our trip was short and sweet and we made some new friends along the way which is always a plus.
